Medical Billing and Coding

Medical billing and coding professionals have different responsibilities, but enjoy interesting work in pleasant and comfortable offices. This is one of the few health-related occupations in which there is no direct hands-on patient care. Medical billing technicians are responsible for coding claims and medical information for reimbursement purposes from insurance companies.

The increasing use of electronic health records will continue to broaden and change the job responsibilities of medical billing technicians. As more hospitals and doctors’ offices use electronic health records, technicians with certification will be favored by employers.

Technicians may also work in doctor's offices, nursing care facilities, outpatient care centers, and home healthcare services. Employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to increase by 20 percent in the next decade. Employment growth will result from the increase in the number of medical tests, treatments, and procedures expected to be performed.

As a medical billing technician, you can expect to:

  • Enjoy good opportunities for job growth
  • Maintain a consistent work schedule
  • Work closely with billing software and databases
