HVAC

HVAC and refrigeration technicians specialize in installing, maintaining and repairing climate control systems in residential and commercial buildings. Technicians install air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems in buildings where regulated temperatures are necessary, and  they often specialize in either installation or maintenance and repair. They may also specialize in doing heating work or air conditioning and cooling work.

An HVAC technician can become trained at trade schools or technical schools. Some technicians train through apprenticeship programs which combine paid on-the-job training and classroom instruction. Job prospects for HVAC technicians are expected to increase in the next decade because of these new, complex HVAC technologies.

As an HVAC technician, you can expect to:

  • Maintain an understanding of local building codes
  • Work closely with clients to understand their needs
  • Travel to different job sites on a regular basis
